How to create an Instagram DM link
- 01
Paste your profile URL
Open your Instagram profile and copy the URL from the address bar. You can also type just the username if you already know it.
- 02
Check the handle
The tool pulls the username out of whatever you pasted and shows it back, so a post or story URL never turns into a broken link.
- 03
Copy the link or download the QR
You get an ig.me link ready to paste anywhere, and a QR code in four formats for print. Anyone who taps or scans it lands in a DM with you.
Every Instagram link format, and which one you actually want
Instagram has several link formats that look alike and behave differently. This is what each one does.
| Format | What it opens | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| ig.me/m/yourbrand | A direct message with your account | Anywhere you want people to message you |
| instagram.com/yourbrand | Your profile, in the app or the web | The canonical link, and the safest all-round choice |
| instagram://user?username= | Your profile in the iOS app only | App-to-app handoffs where you control both ends |
| ig.me/m/ + QR | The same DM, from a camera | Print, packaging and anything offline |
Why use an Instagram DM link
No searching for your profile
A link opens the message directly. Without one, someone has to leave what they were doing, search Instagram, pick the right account out of several, then find the message button.
It earns the one link in your bio
A profile gets a single clickable slot. Pointing it at a DM turns every profile visit into a conversation you can actually answer.
It works offline too
The same link becomes a QR code on packaging, a flyer or a shop window, so someone standing in front of your product can message you about it.
Frequently asked questions about Instagram DM links
What an ig.me link is, how to get yours, and what it can and cannot do.
ig.me is Instagram's own short domain for direct messages, the counterpart to wa.me for WhatsApp and m.me for Messenger. ig.me/m/yourbrand opens a DM with your account in the Instagram app, or on the web if the app is not installed.
Take your username and put it after ig.me/m/, so an account at instagram.com/yourbrand has the direct message link ig.me/m/yourbrand. Paste your profile URL into the tool above and it works out the username for you, then gives you a QR code alongside it.
It depends which one you mean, which is why the two get confused. instagram.com/yourbrand is your profile link and opens your account. ig.me/m/yourbrand is your DM link and opens a message with you. If you want people to message you, you want the second one.
Open your profile, tap the menu, and your username is in the address bar or under your profile picture. Paste either into the tool above. There is nothing to create: the link exists as soon as your account does.
A link that opens the Instagram app rather than a browser. In practice you rarely need a special one: Instagram supports universal links, so a plain instagram.com/username link already opens the app when it is installed and falls back to the web when it is not. The older instagram://user?username= scheme works only on iOS, needs a completely different intent:// string on Android, and has no fallback at all, so a link that fails silently is the usual result of reaching for it.
Copy the HTML snippet above and paste it into your page. It already carries target="_blank" so the link opens in a new tab, and rel="noopener noreferrer" so the opened page cannot reach back into yours, which is a real security consideration and one most copied snippets leave out. If your site takes Markdown instead, use the Markdown line.
No. WhatsApp's wa.me links take a text parameter and Messenger's m.me links accept one undocumented, but Instagram publishes no equivalent for ig.me, so a DM link cannot open with a message already typed. Anything claiming otherwise is describing a different platform.
Not with this tool, and not from a username. Group chat invite links are generated inside the chat itself: open the group, tap the name, then Invite Link. They are specific to that group and can be reset by anyone who can manage it. ig.me/m/ links always open a one-to-one DM.
Yes. An ig.me link works for personal, creator and business accounts alike, the same way an m.me link opens a chat with anyone. What differs is what you can do with the chat: only professional accounts get auto-replies, saved responses and the tools that manage volume.
The bio link is the obvious one, since a profile only gets a single clickable slot. Beyond that: story stickers, highlight covers, the destination of click-to-DM ads, an email signature, and a QR code on anything printed.
Yes, and the tool above generates one with the link. It comes in four formats: PNG and JPEG for screens, SVG and EPS as vectors that stay sharp at any print size. The code is generated in your browser, so the link is never sent anywhere.
Almost always the username. Check the handle in the link matches your profile exactly: Instagram allows only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and a period in the wrong place is easy to miss. Also confirm you copied your profile URL rather than a post, reel or story URL.
This is a known limitation on Instagram's side rather than a problem with the link. ig.me resolves reliably on mobile, where the app is installed, but on desktop it sometimes lands on a login screen or the web inbox instead of the conversation. The workaround is the QR code above: scanning it opens the DM on the phone, where it behaves.
Now the DMs. Every post you publish sends people to your inbox.
Spur answers every DM, story reply and comment with an AI agent, turns comments into DMs automatically, and brings Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger into one inbox.
