How to write an Instagram caption
- 01
Say what the post is
A sentence is enough. The more specific, the better the caption.
- 02
Set length and extras
Short, medium or long, with hashtags and emojis if you want them.
- 03
Copy it into Instagram
Paste it under your photo. Edit anything that does not sound like you.
Two ways to get a caption
Copy one that already works
Sixty-four captions sorted by occasion, for when you just need something now.
Hashtags picked for the post
Turn them on and they come back matched to what you described, not a generic block.
The first line does the work
Instagram cuts the caption off after about 125 characters, so the opening carries it.
What makes a caption work
Four things that change how a caption performs, in the order they matter.
- 01
Front-load the point
Instagram truncates around 125 characters. Whatever matters has to be before the more link.
- 02
Ask one clear question
A question with an obvious short answer earns comments. An open-ended one earns none.
- 03
Hashtags in the caption
Three to five relevant ones beat thirty generic ones, and they can sit in the first comment instead.
- 04
Sound like a person
Read it out loud. If you would not say it, rewrite it before you post it.
Frequently asked questions
Caption length, hashtags, and what actually gets engagement.
A good caption says one thing clearly, puts it in the first line, and sounds like the person posting. Instagram cuts captions off after roughly 125 characters, so anything clever that arrives after that is mostly unread.
Start with the single most interesting thing about the post and write that as the first line. Add context after it, then a question if you want comments. If you are stuck, copy one from the list above and change it, or describe the post and let the generator draft one.
The limit is 2,200 characters, but only about 125 show before the more link. Short captions suit a strong image; long ones work when the story is the point. Either way the first line has to earn the tap.
Three to five relevant ones outperform thirty generic ones. Instagram allows up to 30, but padding with broad tags puts you in feeds full of unrelated posts. You can put them in the first comment instead; reach is the same.
They help break up a long caption and add tone a sentence cannot carry. Two or three is usually plenty. Avoid using them to replace words, because screen readers announce every one by name and it makes the caption hard to follow.
Because it is often the only line. In the feed, Instagram shows roughly the first 125 characters and hides the rest behind more. Someone scrolling decides from that line whether to tap, so the hook, the number or the question belongs there.
Yes. The caption list is free to copy with no account at all, and the AI generator is free to use with a fair-use limit per hour so it stays available. No email and no card.
Yes, that is what they are for. Copy any of them and use them as they are, or change a word or two so they sound like you. They are written to be generic enough to fit a lot of posts.
They affect comments and saves more than likes. A caption that asks something answerable gets replies, and replies pull the post back into other people's feeds. A caption that says nothing gets scrolled past whatever the photo looks like.
Yes. Tap the three dots on your post and choose Edit. The caption changes but the post keeps its likes and comments. Editing does not reset how the post is distributed.
The same limit applies, but far less of it shows: Reels display only a line or two before the more link, so keep them shorter. The question at the end still works, because comments matter on Reels too.
Yes. Describe your post in the language you want and the caption comes back in it. The captions in the list above are in English, which is what most accounts use for a global audience, but the generator follows whatever you type.
Now the DMs. Every post you publish sends people to your inbox.
Spur answers every DM, story reply and comment with an AI agent, turns comments into DMs automatically, and brings Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger into one inbox.
